Silly NEPA, Yoga Pants Are For The Gym

"I wear yoga pants because I'm too lazy for real pants." Pardon me, but what?

The woman in this commercial very well might live in Northeastern Pennsylvania. While many may feel that sweatpants for life is a lazy student kind of lifestyle, walking into any mall or restaurant in this area will disprove this theory.

Can it be that this commercial is correct? Are we really too lazy to put on "real pants"?

Recently at lunch with my friend Lauren we got to talking about what we wear to class, a topic perfectly appropriate being that the fall semester just started. Lauren seriously joked that she would feel slovenly if she were to wear the purple skinnies and chiffon top she was in that day to any class at NYU. According to Lauren, NYU students take pride in their clothes and peers would frown upon her if she showed up to english lit wearing sweats.

My super chic friend who reintroduced me to Shop It To Me earlier in the summer and first showed me the wonders of the designer clothing industry was shocked and astounded by how often NE Pennsylvanians and the local college students rocked this lackluster look.

Even Dakota Fanning commented in a recent interview that just because she is now a freshman at NYU doesn't mean that she will let her style disappear and start wearing sweats. She opts for a more causal yet put together look as seen below.

Misericordia University fashion columnist Michele Drago also displayed a dismay to the number of students who truly do not seem to take pride in their wardrobe. "People don’t realize how important fashion is. People really judge you by what you wear. If you come to class and you have sweatpants on obviously your professor will think that that person doesn’t really care," said Drago in an interview for The Highlander.

Yoga and sweatpants have their place in every wardrobe. Mine find themselves in a drawer under my bed along with all the other clothes I run and waitress in. They stay far away from the skirts and pants I normally wear in everyday life. By reaching for a pair of jeans on lazy days, anyone can feel comfortable while looking so much more put together.

I often joke that the Wyoming Valley is six months behind the rest of the world when it comes to fashion, sadly this is no joke. Most seem to be stuck in a high school sense of reality where high fashion is Abercrombie & Fitch and if the shirt doesn't make a naughty under-toned joke it is not worth wearing. College is an opportunity to reinvent yourself and your style. Take this opportunity and run with it. Don't become another number in the tally of those who couldn't care less about style, fashion and self-pride.With so many fashion moments waiting to happen it is an absolute shame to see such a lack of enthusiasm when it comes to getting dressed in the mornings.

With the addition of a flashy beaded necklace or feathery earrings a simple casual outfit can turn into a magnificent model moment. Paired with jeggings, a shawl front cardigan (which runs in price anywhere from $10-$500) it becomes a wonderful alternative to sweats in everyday life.

The cashmere Minnie Rose cardigan seen above retails on Singer 22 for $218 but is sure to be a comfortable and stylish alternative to a sweatshirt and yoga pants and can be styled up or down depending on your accessories.
