Point of Inspiration: Your Roots

Inspiration for one’s style can truly come from anywhere. Be it from the runway or your backyard, I find that combining elements of your own personality into your style can not only allow for a fun method of self-expression, but it also makes your style unique. Being a style maverick myself, it only made sense that my latest inspiration came from my home: Austin, Texas. Like me, Austin is truly a melting pot of the East coast and West Coast colliding with the hearty Southern tradition. Getting back to your roots can be a fun way to add a unique flair to your look, and is easily done through use of accessories or footwear. The “Urban Cowgirl” look is an easy way to incorporate color and depth into your outfit with versatile accessories like boots or something a little more unique, like a bolo tie.

These Lucchese boots add a bright pop of red to an otherwise subdued white cotton blouse and high-waisted denim shorts. The detailed embroidery on the boots adds texture and visual interest as well. These cowgirl boots easily add both color and personality to Andreina’s look. While they can come at a steep price, they are a lasting investment. Boots like these can also be found second-hand, and if you’re a student, like I am, you should definitely explore vintage and second-hand shops in your area. When purchasing boots like these, there are a few considerations you should take into account. There is no break-in period; they should be comfortable from the start. Try walking around on a hard surface for a few steps. The material is also an important element to consider when purchasing boots. Leather uppers with ensure a long lifetime as well as adding comfort by wicking away moisture from your feet. Other materials won’t last as long, but will probably save you some money.

The Lucchese Goat boot is a perfect summer pick. You can literally wear these boots anywhere. From music festivals to a night out, these boots will take you where you want to go. While you can find cowboy boots in almost any color, I picked red because it adds a burst of noticeable color that really compliments Andi’s skin tone. If you don’t like red, another less overpowering color I like is turquoise. Yippee Ki Yay makes a great looking turquoise boot that will run you about $50 less than these red ones. Lucchese’s attention to detail and fine craftsmanship shines through on these boots with the “Amigo” stitch pattern done in contrasting black and white. The 12” shaft of the boot ensures that it is comfortable to wear by keeping the boot in place on your foot without any buckles or zippers. Because these boots fit closely to the calf, it creates a more feminine silhouette. The heel is comfortable but will still afford you about 2 inches of height. The pointed toe adds to the femininity, as opposed to the squared- or round-toe boots. While they may be simple, they are sleek and bold addition to anyone’s wardrobe. At $329.99 they aren’t a cheap choice, but they are well worth it and you won’t quit wearing them until you quit walking!

Incorporating a unique accessory into your outfit is another perfect way to get people interested in what you’re wearing while communicating your personal style at the same time. While I’m not one for subtlety, a bolo tie can be a big statement without having to go over the top. When incorporating statement accessories into your style, it’s important not to make a costume. If you’re wearing a loud accessory, avoid wearing a loud pattern. The bolo tie is a fun alternative to a necklace or traditional tie and can easily add personality to any look. My personal favorite is my scorpion bolo that belonged to my father in the 70’s.

Putting a contemporary spin on a vintage article of clothing allows for a unique and versatile look that can easily transition from day to night. Using basics to highlight a vintage piece is an easy way to not only incorporate street style into your look, but it can also be used to add personality to your work attire. Adding vintage jewelry or shoes to a work outfit is an easy way to express yourself through your style, even in the office.

Using unique accessories to complement the latest trends are a great way to stay up-to-date as well as put your own personality into your look.

I am a style enthusiast. Fashion isn’t what guides me, but rather a love of self-expression through personal style. I love upcycled and second-hand clothes as well as the occasional indulgence in new pieces. Unique silhouettes and basics get my mouth watering. I am an advertising student hailing from the city of Austin, Texas and am definitely influenced by my surroundings. I love bringing anything from a western inspired boot to a studded jacket reminiscent of the “goth” aesthetic into my look. I’m constantly looking for new ways to express myself through clothing and love sharing my experiences with others.
